For almost 50 years, Schwinn has been hailed as the most respected name in fitness industry. This company has been known to produce quality and sturdy stationary and recumbent bikes, group cycling machines and other exercise equipment. Since the early 1900’s up to the 1980’s, Schwinn has been the leading company when it comes to bikes. They maintained a steady 25% share in the stock market for said products.
During its reign as the top leading brand for bikes and other fitness machines, Schwinn made more innovations. They added in coaster bikes, forewheel expander brakes, ballon tires, and handle-mounted gear which made their bikes cutting edge and state-of-the-art during the time. It didn’t stop there. During the next decades, Schwinn released the famous lines like the Paramount and Sting-Ray. Famous bikes like the Aerocycle, Cycleplane, and Autocycle were all from Schwinn.
The 1980s was tough for Schwinn. One of the company’s main problem is that transferred production abroad in an effort to cut costs. Taiwan, Hungry, China and Mississippi are places where they transferred their factories making it hard to ship and transport their products to certain parts of the U.S. They lost confidence among dealers and was over taken by other companies by end of the decade when it comes to sales.
During the early 1990’s Schwinn was sold to Scott Sport Group which later became Schwinn® Fitness. Under the new management, the company gradually rose from the ashes and reclaimed its position at the top. With new and amazing products released into the market, people were flocking dealers a Schwinn product.
Today, Schwinn still leads the way when it comes to quality and durable fitness machines in the U.S. and around the globe.
