What You Should Do
If you're looking for a treadmill that can outlast the owner and money is not a concern, consider the Cybex Trotter Elite treadmill. Treadmill Doctor gave it a perfect 10 in both reliability and quality which only is a rare thing, it also means that you'll have immense difficulty in finding a treadmill anywhere that can last as long as this Cybex/Trotter.
One thing that we are worried about is the price. To expect the best treadmill, you'll of course need to pay a premium price. When you're paying somewhere in the $5000 vicinity, you should definitely expect the best. We already know that this treadmill will probably outlast the owner so it qualifies as "best" under that criteria. But there are a few things we have to take a closer look at.
This is one of the few treadmills anywhere that features a negative incline (-2%). If you're training for a marathon, this downhill running feature is going to be useful. The treadmill also goes as fast as 12.4 MPH which is pretty much the top speed when it comes to treadmills. But then we come to the warranty and the belt.
The warranty was probably meant for a commercial setting so we actually see it being WORST than what you often find in the $2000 area. Five years motor, 3 years parts and 1 year labor is just average for a home treadmill and below average for a commercial treadmill used in a residential setting. Then we look at the belt. While 20"X59" is respectable and would fit a runner of any size, we're paying top dollar here so we should be getting a lot more. A 22"X62" is closer to what I had in mind.
Verdict: We haven't compared enough commercial models to confidently recommend this treadmill yet. Although the Cybex Elite Treadmill is top notch in quality, the price leaves something to be desired. When we have reviewed more commercial models, we might change our meta score for this but for now, to err on the side of caution, we're not going to strongly recommend it.
