Why Buying A Treadmill Could Be The Most Important Purchase Of Your Life
Before we begin, ask yourself this question. "Why am I buying a treadmill?" You don't have to email me your answer (although I would love to read it if you're willing to share it :D ) but answer yourself honestly.
Now ask yourself a second question. "How would I feel if I really did attain this goal?"
When you ask yourself these questions, be really, really honest with yourself. If you want to slim down so you can fit into that pair of jeans/pants, admit it. If you want to greatly improve your health by exercising more on a treadmill, admit it. If you want to complete a marathon and be super proud of yourself when you do, admit it. Whether it's a vanity, health or milestone type reason, as long as it's strong, I'll show you why buying a treadmill could be the most important purchase of your life.
THE DOMINO EFFECT
Now, most of you have seen dominoes in action. You push the first block and the second block that's close to it, falls. The third block which is next to the second block then also falls and so on and so on.
Now imagine if the first block in the chain of dominoes represents your decision to buy a treadmill. Next, imagine the last block in the chain as representing the goal that you had set your sights on such as achieving your perfect body. Finally, imagine all the blocks in between the first and the last one as hurdles that you're going to have to overcome in order to get to your goals. Is the picture becoming clearer now?
PUSHING THAT FIRST DOMINO OVER - BUYING AND CONSISTENTLY RUNNING ON THE TREADMILL
When you push the first domino over, we all know what's going to happen. The last block is eventually going to fall. But if the last block represents the goal that we have set our hearts on, what does it take to push that first block over?
The answer is surprisingly not JUST buying that treadmill. It's buying and running CONSISTENTLY on the treadmill. Many people have bought the treadmill and even ran on it at the beginning. After the novelty wore off, the treadmill became a clothes hanger for most people. Whatever fitness goal they had set their hearts on at the beginning has become nothing more than another failed attempt.
PUSHING THAT FIRST DOMINO OVER
Would you ever go back to crawling? Not after we've learned how to walk. Would you go back to using diapers? Not after you've been potty trained. (Sorry for the crude example). The point I'm trying to make here is that there are events in your life where after you've gone beyond a certain point, it's hard to accept and do things the way they were.
The following is what constitutes in my opinion as pushing the first domino effect to create an unstoppable, cascading chain of events that eventually leads to the end goal (domino). In other words, this is my opinion and my opinion only. There is no solid scientific claim behind it although I do believe it plays on a psychological aspect of our human minds.
To push that first domino over, you must consistently run on the treadmill until you see undeniable evidence that you're on your way to your goal.
If it's to fit in those size 2 jeans and you're a size 7, getting to a size 5 would be significant evidence that you're well on your way. If you've wanted to run that marathon all your life but you have trouble running for more than 10 minutes right now, breaking that first 5K barrier is good evidence that you're well on your way.
WHY BUYING A TREADMILL COULD BE THE MOST IMPORTANT PURCHASE OF YOUR LIFE
When you buy a shirt and you don't like it, you can return it to the store. When you buy a TV and you don't like it, you can go back and ask for a refund. But when you buy a treadmill and you just don't quite like running, can you just go back and return it to the store? Well technically, of course you can since many stores have a no questions asked money back guarantee. But if you do return it, what does it really mean? What does it really signify?
For some people, it means giving in.
And giving in, could signify the beginning of giving up.
When you give up before the first domino has even been pushed down, what you're really saying is you've given up on that end goal. And when you've given up on that end goal, it also means you've given up on a part of your life. It's basically saying,
"I no longer believe I can look good." (Such as fitting in those size 2 jeans)
"I no longer believe I can achieve something great". (Such as completing a marathon.)
"I no longer want to feel healthy".
This is why pushing the first domino is so important. Don't give up. Once you've pushed the first block over, you'll never want to move back (i.e diapers). If you don't move back, the only way is forward. And if you keep moving forward, your end goal will eventually be in sight.
